Eli Lilly has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Merida Biosciences. This USD 2.875B deal aims to expand the developer’s immunology portfolio by incorporating specialized biotechnology assets.
Focus on Precision Biologics for Immune Conditions
Merida Biosciences, which began operations in April 2025, specializes in the development of precision biologics. The company’s primary research focuses on the selective degradation of pathogenic autoantibodies, which are known to drive various immune-mediated conditions. By targeting these specific disease-causing agents, the firm aims to address the underlying biological factors of these illnesses rather than relying solely on broad immune system suppression.
Advancing Clinical Programs
Currently, MER511, Merida’s lead program, is undergoing Phase I clinical trials. This program is specifically designed to treat Graves’ disease and thyroid eye disease. Both of these immune-mediated conditions are caused by thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins that act upon the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor.
The USD 2.875B deal will also bring additional assets into the development pipeline. This includes the development of MER769, a candidate currently being studied for potential applications in treating food allergies, asthma, and chronic spontaneous urticaria.
Clinical Development and Pipeline Integration
Leadership from both organizations emphasized the potential of the USD 2.875B deal.
According to Francisco Ramírez-Valle, senior vice president of immunology research and early clinical development at Lilly, said, “We’re building our pipeline around therapies that meaningfully change the course of disease, not just its downstream effects.”
“Merida was founded to fundamentally change how autoimmune and allergic diseases are treated,” Merida CEO Adam Townsend said.
