McLaren Northern Michigan selects Vocera solutions to connect care teams

McLaren Northern Michigan in the US has deployed solutions from Vocera Communications to connect care teams across the hospital, including its new Offield Family Pavilion.

The new 182,000-square-foot hospital wing features 104 private inpatient rooms in a new intensive care unit.

It also has a cardiovascular unit, and surgical unit, and many technologies and services, majority of which were funded by local donations for improving the patient and staff experience.

McLaren Northern Michigan chief nursing officer and Patient Care Services vice-president Jennifer Woods said: “We are fortunate to have a caring and supportive community that enabled us to implement essential solutions and build a modern facility to match our world-class care. Our clinicians and staff deserve the best tools and technologies.”

Vocera solutions will help McLaren Health Care System to standardise care team collaboration as well as communication at every point of care.

Nurses, physicians and other care team members throughout the hospital are equipped with the Vocera Vina smartphone application.

With the wearable, voice-controlled Vocera Smartbadge, they can also quickly communicate and collaborate.

Furthermore, using the Vocera Smartbadge and Vina app, healthcare workers will be able to connect quickly with the right person or group with the help of “call 201 nurse,” “call ICU pharmacist” or “call trauma team” voice commands.

These mobile solutions also enable team members to send and receive secure messages and manage alert and alarm notifications easily.

Other solution selected by McLaren Northern Michigan includes the Vocera Engage intelligent workflow engine that prioritises and routes notifications with actionable information to the right clinician on their device of choice.

The panic buttons on the Vocera Smartbadge and Spectralink Versity will enable the care team members to reach safety and security personnel instantly.

McLaren Northern Michigan also plans to integrate the Vocera solutions with the hospital’s real time location system, nurse call, digital whiteboards, electronic health record system, physiologic monitors and smart beds.

The integration will help the 202-bed hospital to simplify workflows, reduce interruptions, mitigate cognitive overload, and speed up response times.
